Landscape with wheat sheaves and rising moon
Yeses and nos and all the answers in between are not just answers and all the answers in between
just like the cool thick brushstrokes of Van Gogh’s later skies
are not just questions
and all the question marks in between. Van Gogh painted over nine hundred paintings
and drew over one thousand one hundred sketches
in just nine years. Self-taught, he came to art late.
In 1890 he shot himself,
still silent on what exactly happened
that night in Arles
when he and Paul Gaugin
best friends
made a pact of silence.
Following a violent argument
between the two painters
Van Gogh was left with a severed ear
though it isn’t clear
how it happened
only that he wrapped the ear in cloth
and presented it
to a prostitute
and she fainted. In between aversion and desire
in between inspiration and splattered ‘blood’
in between yeasayers and naysayers
